Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
What is ACT?
ACT is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that has been found to be helpful for a range of presenting difficulties. The main goal is to help clients “create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it.” (Harris, 2009). If you’re interested in learning more about ACT, we highly recommend you watch Dr. Russ Harris’ Youtube video: The 3 Happiness Myths.
What do you do in ACT?
Learn to be more present (rather than focus on the past or future or get stuck on auto-pilot)
Learn strategies to help you handle painful thoughts and feelings more effectively so that they have less impact on your daily life
Clarify what’s truly important to you and set goals for actions that align with your values
“In ACT, we’re not aiming to merely reduce human suffering, we’re also aiming to help people learn and row as a result of their suffering, and to use their pain as a spring board into creating reich and meaningful lives.”
— Dr. Russ Harris, author of ACT Made Simple
Where can I find an ACT Therapist?
Many of the therapists at the Ontario-Wide Psychology Clinic (OWPC) are trained in ACT and integrate this approach with other evidence-based practices to best meet your needs.
Services are provided virtually, allowing you to access therapy from the comfort of your home and are covered by most extended health benefits.
